“It makes me feel proud to know I am helping others. I gain valuable experience from my role. It gives me more confidence & the work is very interesting.”

Who are Home-Start volunteers?

Our volunteers are committed and caring people who offer their time freely.

They are usually parents themselves and bring with them personal experience, skills and knowledge of the resources available within their local area.

They are friendly and approachable and can be relied on and trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental, and to respect the needs of each individual family, providing a confidential service.

All volunteers…

  • Attend a 10 week Preparation Course, which can be accredited by CERTA (formally the Open College Network) and takes place one day or evening a week. This fully prepares volunteers for their role
  • Receive lots of support from a designated co-ordinator both during the Preparation Course and after, when they are supporting Home-Start families
  • Can access free additional training and social events throughout the year
  • Receive all out of pocket expenses incurred while volunteering for Home-Start

Volunteers usually support a family for 2-3 hours per week. If you can offer more time we would usually ask you to support another family.

We work with you, carefully matching you with a family you feel you can give the best support to and in the geographical areas that you request. We have families requiring support for a wide range of reasons and who would like you to visit during the daytime, evening and at the weekend.

Preparation Course

This is the 10 week compulsory course that all volunteers must attend before being matched with a family. Courses are offered daytime (10am to 2.30pm) or evening (6pm to 9pm) at various locations in Oldham, Stockport and Tameside. Our experienced co-ordinators facilitate all courses.

Welcome Events

If you wish to find out more about being a volunteer, you can attend a welcome event. This is an opportunity for you to meet some of the co-ordinators who you might be working with and find out more about our work. It is an informal event for you to ask any questions you might have. We will also help you fill out your application forms if you have not yet returned them.

You can download an application form in word or PDF format below. Please complete the Home-Visiting Volunteer Application Form and the Monitoring Form and return them to the office by post or email them to info@homestarthost.org.uk
