Attachment and Bonding for Dads
Dad Matters, powered by Home-Start, works alongside families, professionals, and organisations to help babies build strong, secure relationships with their dads – right from the start.
Bonding with your baby is not about being perfect, it’s about being present. Every dad’s journey is different, but the small things you do each day make a big difference to your baby’s world.
Dad Matters, because for every baby, their dad matters to them.
Why does bonding matter?
The early relationship you build with your baby lays the foundation for their emotional, social, and even physical development. Research shows that secure attachment in the first years of life helps children grow up feeling safe, confident, and ready to learn.
👉 Did you know?
Babies recognise their dad’s voice from inside the womb. By talking, reading, or singing during pregnancy, you’re already helping your baby feel safe and connected.
How do I know if my baby is bonding with me?
Bonding goes both ways. Before they can talk, babies communicate using gestures, sounds, and expressions. You might observe:
- Your baby seeking your face and recognising your voice
- Smiles, eye contact, or a relaxed posture when held
- Excited kicking or gentle reaching toward you

What can I do to build attachment with my baby?
These gentle, everyday actions can make a lasting difference:
- Skin-to-skin contact – holding your baby close regulates their breathing, heart rate, and temperature.
- Responding to cues – when your baby fidgets or vocalises, your responses help them feel understood.
- Play and interaction – talking, singing, smiling, or copying facial expressions strengthens your connection.
- Routine care – feeding, nappy changes, and bathing all create powerful bonding moments.

What if bonding doesn’t happen straight away?
It’s perfectly normal not to feel an instant bond – especially after a difficult birth, NICU stay, or life changes. Bonding often develops gradually through consistent moments and kindness toward yourself.
