Volunteering in our Charity Shop

Volunteering at our charity shop in Hyde is a great way to gain retail experience, and connect socially. You’ll learn valuable skills like customer service, cash handling, and visual merchandising as you help sort donations, and price items. Whether you’re chatting with customers, creating eye-catching displays, or working the till, you’ll be part of a team that turns pre-loved items into vital funds for our work.

Work experience & Duke of Edinburgh award placements

You can volunteer in our shop from the age of 14 (anyone under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian’s consent), so we welcome applications from those looking to complete some rewarding work experience with us.

If you’re completing a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, consider doing your volunteering element with Home-Start!  Even short-term placements are a real help to our shop team.

Volunteering in our Baby Bank Warehouse

Last year our Baby Bank team packed and distributed 5,355 essential items to families across Greater Manchester.

Volunteering with our Baby Bank, you’ll join a busy, friendly team ensuring families can access help when they are most vulnerable.  It’s a really rewarding role, knowing the impact these items have for the families who need them.  There are even some things you could do from home, like ironing baby clothes, and your time commitment can be as much or as little as suits you.

What kind of things could I get involved with?

Equipment and Toy Safety Checks

Conduct cleaning and safety/functionality checks on donated equipment and toys before they are distributed to families.

Clothing Sorting

Check and sort donated clothing to ensure that families receive high-quality items for their children.

Drivers for Donation Collections

Become a vital part of our team by volunteering as a driver to collect donations when they cannot be delivered to our warehouse.

Fundraising and Advocacy

Help raise awareness and support for our service by engaging in fundraising activities and spreading the word about the crucial work we do.

Digital Commerce Volunteering

As an e-commerce volunteer you’ll be helping to take our preloved items to market!  We’re always on the look out for photographers, people who can write great product descriptions  and volunteers who could list items for sale on eBay.  If you just have a few hours here and there each month, or you’d like something you can do from home, this is a great opportunity to help us raise funds to support more families.
